A suspected rapist’s claims to the paternity of a newborn baby in Uzere community of Isoko South local government area in Delta State has sparked uneasiness in the area.
It was reliably gathered that the new baby boy was delivered under unlawful circumstances.
The mother of the baby (name withheld) was allegedly ambushed and raped by the suspect on her way to the farmland, and was later discovered to be pregnant.
The girl, who in her early 20s, had suffered emotional trauma of being raped.
Meanwhile, family of the suspect on Monday made attempt take custody of the baby reportedly delivered two weeks ago, but their efforts met a brick wall as the family of the victim allegedly threatened to invite the police.
Speaking to our correspondent, mother of the suspected rapist, Mrs. Eunice Ogbodor, said “My son said it was based on agreement that they made love on her way to the farmland, since then it has been war, we begged, they refused”.
Speaking on the incident, the police image-maker in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, said the suspect who claimed to be the father of the newborn baby took to his heels, when he got wind of the police invitation.
She said “the police are still investigating the alleged rape, and we will ensure the suspect is brought to book it”
