Oyo CP Blames Fire Incidents On Human Negligence

The State Police Command has attributed the cause of incessant fire outbreaks in the state to human negligence.
The state commissioner of police, Leye Oyebade in a statement signed by the command’s image maker, DSO Adekunle Ajisebutu and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Saturday, admonished all members of the public to be more safety- conscious and take all precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreaks.
The call came on the heels of the setting up of a six-member panel by Governor Abiola Ajimobi to investigate and get to the root of the two fire outbreaks that occurred last Friday and Monday at the Alaro/Igbajo Plank Market at Sango, Ibadan where over 200 shops and equipment were destroyed.
The police command in a statement entitled: “ Need to prevent incessant fire incidents in the State”, said that “investigations have shown that many of such fire outbreaks were as a result of human negligence and in rare instances, deliberate”.
As an institution saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property, the Police Commissioner said, “We cannot fold our arms and watch these sad incidents destroy us. We therefore use this medium to admonish members of the public to take all precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreak.
“Such measures include: putting off electrical/electronic appliances not in use while going out, proper handling of naked light from candles, stoves, lantern/hurricane lamps, avoiding storage of petrol in hones, shops or any other unsafe places, provision of appropriate fire extinguishers, avoiding careless bush burning, as well as proper handling of other inflammable substances”.
Oyebade also warned all “unscrupulous elements who unlawfully and maliciously set fire to property of innocent citizens either for vengeance or for whatever reason to desist from such criminal acts punishments commensurate with the offences committed await them.”
