A BURGER KING manager stole more than £10,000 from the restaurant where he worked – to pay for medical treatment for his sister.
'Model employee' Amster Regala took cash from the takings at the fast-food chain's Freeport Talke branch over a two-week period.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard the 40-year-old's sister was terminally ill in the Philippines – and her family there was unable to pay for treatment.
He applied for a loan and stole the money but intended to pay it back when the loan came through, the court heard.
Prosecutor Kevin Grego said Regala was a long-standing employee who had worked his way up to a management position, and was responsible for delivering the takings to the bank.
He said: "Money has been taken at the end of each day from the tills. It was realised there were discrepancies in the banked takings on a daily basis.
"This caused the area manager to start making inquiries about what has happened.
"Once it was clear that an audit was in progress there was a telephone call from the defendant's sister, to say he had tried to take his own life.
"She said he had taken £10,000 and could she sort it out."
Regala, who has no previous convictions, was arrested and went on to plead guilty to the theft of £10,900 between January 28 and February 15.
