A renewed violent clash between rival cult groups in Benin City, Edo State, has left no fewer than five persons dead.
It was learned that the cult war allegedly between members of Neo
Black Movement (a.k.a. Aye) and Mafite group around New Benin axis of
Benin and Lucky Way area of the state capital.
Though its not certain what led to the trouble, our correspondent
however learnt that that trouble started, weekend, for the cult groups,
which allegedly, provided security cover to some politicians after a
disagreement over what they called ‘deffered’ issues
A member of Mafite group was said to have been beaten and hacked to
death at New Benin while a reprisal attack was carried out by rival
group at Lucky Way living about four dead.
The incident, it was further learnt, has spread to other parts of the
city as members of the group (Aye) vowed to avenge the death of their
member
When contacted, the state police spokesman, DSP Osifo Onwochei, said
the command had taken drastic effort to curtail the situation but could
not confirm any deaths.
He said, “We are aware of cult-related incidents around Benin
Metropolis and the Commissioner of Police has given directives to all
divisional police officers (DPOs) to rid the town of all these elements.
We have intensified patrol and asked our men to raid all hideouts of
these boys. We can assure you that normalcy has been restored.”
