Ogun Assembly orders probe of DPO over alleged extortion February 23, 2016

The Ogun State House of Assembly has ordered the probe of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sagamu Division,Mr. John Mark, over alleged extortion.

The issue was raised by the House Majority Leader, Honorable Yinka Mafe, under personal explanation during plenary, against the DPO,accusing him of demanding huge sum of money from accused persons before they could be granted bail.

Mafe alleged that the DPO was fond of arresting residents unlawfully on a daily basis and demanding money from them.

The lawmaker representing Sagamu 1 state constituency in the Assembly submitted that residents of the area are ready to stage protest against him.

"I want to tell you that the people of Sagamu are ready to stage a protest.

"The matter has been reported to the police command but nothing has been done. This same DPO walked out a first class Oba from his office.

``Immediately he assumed office as the DPO of Sagamu Division, he withdrew the security details of a former governor.

``He should be removed before the situation gets out of hand," he said.‎

Responding, the Speaker, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, urged the state Commissioner of Police,AbdulMajid Ali, to investigate the matter.

He appreciated the lawmaker for bringing the issue to the House, saying that the people should remain calm and maintain peace.

"I appreciate the member for bringing this issue before the house. It is a very serious allegation and I want to urge the people to remain calm.

`The House of Assembly will not relent in its efforts at ensuring peace across the state. The House has been enjoying good relationship with the police.

"I want the Commissioner of Police to look into the matter before it will degenerate into breakdown of law and order
