Cobbler to face murder charge for killing friend

Awolesi.....in police net for killing his friend 1

If only the dead could speak, then Akeem would have been able to state his own side of the story; but alas, he is lying stone dead at the morgue, no thanks to a knife wound he received from Awolesi who claims to have acted in self defense.

According to reports, Awolesi Ademola, 20, a cobbler and an indigene of Ogun state had ‘mistakenly stabbed his friend’ Akeem with a knife during a fight. The incident took place about 10 pm last Tuesday at toll gate area in railway line, Mushin, Lagos.

Daily Times gathered that the duo used to be friends, but their relationship went sour when late Akeem chose to start living a ‘wayward life.’
Although the actual cause of the fight is yet unknown, Awolesi alleged that it was in the tradition of the late Akeem to always pick a fight with him at any given opportunity since he started avoiding him.
It was also gathered that after he was stabbed on the hand, late Akeem, instead of being taken to the hospital, was taken to an herbalist home where they claimed he was stabbed with a poisonous knife. He was reported to have bled to death there.
Awolesi, first of five children tells his story. “On the day of the incident, I was working on a shoe in my shop. I needed a knife to complete the work since it was a high heeled shoe. I rushed down home to get a small table knife. I did not return the knife until the close of work that day.
“On my way home that night, I saw Akeem standing in one corner close to my house I just passed him, not bothering to ask why he was there. On getting home, I was told he had been there for long. Something in me told me he was out for trouble so I chose not to approach him.
“I called my friend Idris and reported Akeem to him. He advised me not to make trouble with him. While I was seeing off Idris who had also come to visit me that night at about 10 pm, Akeem rushed out from where he was hiding.
“He started raining blows on me; this was not the first time he was harassing me, so I fought back. In the process of fighting, I noticed he was having an upper hand and it occurred to me I had a small knife with me. I brought out the knife to scare him but unfortunately, while we were dragging the knife, I stabbed him on the hand.
“He started bleeding and for fear of not knowing what to do, I ran away. Neighbors ran to report what had happened to my father who in turn called me and advised me to sleep somewhere else and not come home. He told me he would handle the matter. The next day, a neighbor known as mummy Miriam called my phone asking me where I was. I lied to her that I was somewhere else meanwhile I was at my shop. She kept calling and she later informed me to go and look for money with which Akeem will be treated.
“She also informed me that Akeem was taken to an herbalist house but that they wanted to move him to the hospital and that they needed money. I told her I had no money that I would run around for some. At about 5 pm that day, the woman called me again that my father was being disturbed about the issue. So, I went to see if some of my friends could be of help, I was on my way when some guys on bike stopped me and asked if I was the one who stabbed Akeem, I told them it was not intentional.
They insisted I follow them which I did. On getting to our neighborhood, I was informed that Akeem was dead. They alleged I had stabbed him with a poisonous knife. But I told them it was not true that the knife was only a small kitchen knife which we also use at home. I was also told that he was given something to drink by the herbalist and that it was that thing he vomited until his death. I was taken to Alakara Police Division in Mushin.
“It was not an intentional act. He was my friend. I got to know him through one Rasheed who is also a close friend from my secondary school days. I only had to desist from relating with Akeem when he began smoking Indian hemp and his life style became too rough for my liking. My father noticed it and advised me to keep him at arm’s length.”
The case has however been transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) Panti Yaba for further investigations.
