The office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Bayelsa State Police Command was yesterday thrown into confusion following the escape of three notorious armed robbery suspects from custody.
The suspects, identified as Ramsey Moses, Obi Clifford and Sele Pamodie, were arrested some months ago over alleged cases of armed robbery, rape and cultism in some parts of the state.
One of them was identified as the ring leader of a notorious gang of armed robbers terrorising the Akenfa and Azikoro areas of the state capital.
LEADERSHIP gathered that though the details of the daring escape of the suspects were not known, the alarm raised following the escape caused pandemonium among the personnel of the Anti-Robbery Squad.
While many claimed the suspects escaped when they were sent out within the SARS premises to clean up the surroundings, others claimed they escaped through spiritual means.
The office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, according to some concerned residents of the state capital, lacks the needed fencing and proper operational office for the policemen.
Many of the residents called on the state government and the inspector-general of the police, Solomon Arase, to provide the needed logistics and habitable accommodation for the SARS.
Contacted on the development, the spokesman of the police command, Asimin Butswat, confirmed the escape of the three suspects, but said they were rearrested few hours later at a hideout along the Azikoro area of the state capital.
He said, “Yes, on the 22nd of November, three suspects in police custody escaped. And they were arrested on the 23rd of November at about 12.10pm.\
