Gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu hotel in the capital Bamako, shooting
and screaming "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for "God Is Great", according to
reports.
Security sources say some gunmen are freeing hostages who can recite verses of the Koran, reports the Daily Telegraph.
In a statement, the Rezidor Hotel Group confirmed that it was "aware of the hostage-taking that is ongoing at the property today".
The company said "two persons have locked in 140 guests and 30 employees", although Sky News suggests there are around ten gunmen in total.
One member of staff said over the phone to Sky News that the attackers also used grenades in the assault.
The hotel is in a neighbourhood west of the city centre, where government ministries and diplomats reside.
The West African country has experienced many terror attacks since Islamic extremists, some with links to al-Qaeda, took control of the north following a military coup in 2012.
A French-led military intervention in 2013 scattered the extremists from towns and cities, but the region remains insecure and there have been attacks in the south. Earlier this year, five people were killed when masked gunmen attacked a restaurant popular with foreigners in the southern capital of Bamako.
More than 1,000 French troops remain in the country.
The UK Foreign Office, which has advised against all travel to Mali for some time, said: "We are in contact with local authorities and urgently seeking further information following reports of an incident at the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, Mali."
