Traders who engage in various businesses at the Police Officers Wives
Association (POWA) market, Mopol 20 barracks, Ikeja, on Sunday wept
profusely when fire engulfed the market, destroying goods worth N30m.
The fire which started around 5.30 pm was said to have lasted about 3
hours. Three long blocks of the market stalls were razed down.
It was gathered that most people did not come to their shops because it was a Sunday and the market was virtually empty.
People initially made frantic efforts to recover some goods before
the officials of the fire service came to put out the fire. Most people
affected sell clothes, food stuff, drinks, provisions , tailoring items
among other goods and services. Items such as grinding machines,
generating sets, television sets, fans, cash, among others, were burnt.
One of the traders, Mama Caro said all the goods in her tailoring
shop were destroyed, including sewing machines. “Many of us lost items
worth very large sums. If we put all the things we lost in term of cash,
it is worth about about N30 m.” she claimed
The Area ‘F’ Ikeja commander, ACP Edward Ajogun, the Ikeja divisional
police officer, CSP Ademola Ogunyamoju and some officers from the
command visited the scene around 12pm.
During the visit, Ajogun invited the private security man guarding
the market to explain what happened. He was later invited to the police
station to give further statements to help investigations.
