A man has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in Swindon.
Joyce Rodrigues admitted the attack which he carried out in the centre of the town last year. A judge described it as an attack "of the most appalling kind".
Rodrigues took his victim - who had been walking home from a nightclub - into an alleyway off Regent Street and raped her twice.
His victim said the effects on her life had been devastating, leaving her constantly nervous, lacking confidence and isolated from everybody.
CCTV footage and leaflets were circulated around Swindon to try to catch Rodrigues after the attack.
At the end of 2015 Wiltshire Police attended another incident and one of the officers there was able to identify Rodrigues as the suspect for the rape as a result of the quality of the CCTV evidence.
He was arrested and combining the CCTV with the DNA evidence the police were able to conclusively identify him.
Rodrigues, who is from Goa in india, was here on a visa which had expired. He faces deportation when he has finished his sentence.
