The state coordinator of NAFDAC, Garba Abubakar, made this known to newsmen during the destruction exercise which took place yesterday along Kola road in Birnin Kebbi, attended by the community leaders, the police, Customs, Civil Defence Corps, and the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, Atiku Abubakar Kende.
According to the Kebbi State coordinator of NAFDAC, Garba Abubakar, 90 per cent of the items set ablaze were expired and unregistered drugs confiscated from hawkers who move about the streets and markets selling the items to people.
“All the banned seized items that we gathered from 2012 to date included drugs, food items, cosmetics and chemicals; also a few medical devices were confiscated and burnt today. They were all worth N15million”, he said.
He called on members of the general public to stop patronising hawkers and always buy their drugs from registered patent medicine stores.
In his remarks at the occasion, the representative of the director general of NAFDAC, Mr. Ozigis Abdulsalam, said that it has become necessary for NAFDAC to stop the use and selling of expired and unregistered drugs to safeguard public health in the country.
