Man subjected to a "serious assault" with a hammer

It was reported that at around 6.35pm on Saturday a 20 year old man was attacked by a gang of up to ten youths on Skegoneill Avenue.

He was knocked to the ground and struck with what is believed to have been a hammer. He sustained a suspected fracture wrist and swelling to his head and face as a result of the attack.
A 17-year-old man was arrested a short time later on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
Detective Inspector Mark McHaffie is appealing for anyone who was in the area of Skegoneill Avenue or Jellicoe Avenue yesterday evening and who witnessed the assault or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact Detectives in Musgrave Police Station on 101.
Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
TUV councillor Jolene Bunting has claimed that in addition to the attack on the man, around 30 others attacked cars and homes following the Cliftonville vs Crusaders clash at Seaveiw.

She has also claimed that the Irish Football Association must do more to protect local residents.
"The IFA must do more to protect residents at interfaces when rival teams meet," she said.
"Residents have told me that after every match there have been incidents including stone throwing and sectarian abuse.
"I and the North and the West Belfast TUV team plan to arrange a meeting with the IFA and Police and local residents to try to prevent such incidents happening again."
