Police on Monday said bullets fired by police to disperse a mob snapped a high-voltage cable fell and killed 11 people in India’s north-eastern Assam state, a report said.
They said that they were trying to disperse a group of protesters who had laid siege to a police station in Asam’s Tinsukia district.
It said that the protesters wanted the police to hand over five people arrested for a murder case that they wanted to punish themselves.
The report said that the mob turned violent and were pelting stones.
“The police fired in the air when a baton charge failed to disperse them.
“The bullets hit an overhead electricity cable which fell on the protesters killing nine on the spot and injuring a dozen others,’’ police said.
The state’s police chief, Mukesh Sahay said that two more died later in hospital.
“The police could not stand by and let a mob wanting to deliver instant justice have their way, that is why we had to fire,’’ the state’s police chief Mukesh Sahay said. (dpa/NAN)
